
IVANO FRANKOVSK STATE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

In the restless after war 1945 to prepare doctors for mountain regions of Pre-carpathian Ukraine Medical institute was founded in Stanislaviv town. Since 1963 after renaming of Regional Centre into Ivano-Frankivsk the Institute obtained a name of Ivano-Frankivsk state medical institute.
The institute had only a medical faculty before 1978, a little later a stomatological faculty was opened. After successful undergoing of state añcrediting and licensing in 1994 the institute was renamed in Ivano-Frankivsk state medical academy, from 2005 was renamed in Ivano-Frankivsk State Medical University .
Now the university prepares high-qualified specialists of medical, stomatological, pharmaceutical and pediatric faculties. Since 1992 a faculty of postgraduate education performs an initial specialization of doctors, pre-licensing training and thematic improvement. During already some years Ivano-Frankivsk state medical university prepares family doctors, which is prevailing branch of a modern Ukrainian Health Care development.
There is a productively functioning training department for citizens from Europe, Asia and Africa which helps them positively adapt to domestic medical education system.
Nowadays more than 3500 students study in Ivano-Frankivsk state medical university. Lectures and practices are delivered to them by 16 Academics, 7 Honored doers of Science and Technicians, 5 Honored doctors of Ukraine , 62 tutors with scientific degree of doctor of medical sciences and above 200 – with degree of candidate of medical sciences. Relative coefficient of staff preparation is the highest throughout Ukraine .
Since 1945 the university gave a profession to more than 14000 doctors, 115 doctors of medical sciences and 490 candidates of medical sciences.
More than theirs hearts and wits dedicated to a foundation and development of Ivano-Frankivsk state medical university its rectors:

- Pocent Sushko Olexyy Îvxentijovych (1947-1948);
- Professor Àntonov Yuriy Georgijovych (1949-1951);
- Professor Lavryk Semen Semenovych (1952-1953);
- Academic Babenko Georgiy Îvxentijovych (1954-1980);
- Professor Dechtjar Anatoliy Leontijovych (1981-1996).
Since 1987 the head of the University is Neiko Yevhen Mykhailovych, an academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, an Honorary Member of Polish Academy of Medicine, State Prize Laureate of Ukraine and Laureate of the Prize of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Laureate of the Honorary Reward of the President of Ukraine and Laureate of the Gold Medal of Albert Schweitzer.

Ivano-Frankivsk State Medical University (it was called medical institute till 1994) was founded in the system of Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine in 1945.
Since 1987 the head of the University is Neiko Yevhen Mykhailovych, an academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, an Honorary Member of Polish Academy of Medicine, State Prize Laureate of Ukraine and Laureate of the Prize of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Laureate of the Honorary Reward of the President of Ukraine and Laureate of the Gold Medal of Albert Schweitzer. He is a founder of the Pre-carpathian Therapeutic School and the author of 600 scientific publication including 20 monographs, standard textbooks, manuals. He has trained more than 40 Doctors and Candidates of Medical Sciences.
40 complex investigations and 10 economic ones based on contracts are carried out at the university every year according to its main scientific direction “The development of new medical technologies and quality standards of diagnosis, prophylaxis and treatment of the most important noninfectious diseases”. 60 Doctors and 200 Candidates of Sciences take part in this work. There are 19 academicians including 1 Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, 9 Members and Associate Members of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences of National Progress, 2 Members of the Academy of Sciences of Technological Cybernetics of Ukraine, 2 Members of New-York Academy of Sciences among them. 80% of the faculties have scientific degrees of Doctor of Sciences or Candidate of Sciences.
In accordance with European program of WHO the scientists of the University take an active part in the project CINDI “Integrated Prophylaxis of Noninfectious Diseases” as well as in the Program of the President of Ukraine “Prevention and Treatment of Arterial Hypertension” and the state project “The Children of Pre-carpathia”. They also participate in some international multi-central investigations.
Research work is carried out in modern-equipped laboratories, such as Electronic Microscopy, Radionuclide, Ecological Medicine, Genetics, Immunology, Medical Biochemistry, Trace Elements and Enzymes ones.
The University is a clinical base of the State Pharmacological Centre of the Public Health Ministry of Ukraine. The medical preparation “Urolesan” synthesized by Ye.M.Neiko and F.I.Mamchur has won the recognition in Europe .
There is a specialized council for maintaining Doctoral and Candidate dissertation at the university.
Highly qualified medical assistance is rendered by the experts of the University. They perform more than 40% of all the diagnostic manipulations and surgical interventions, consult about 60% of patients, serve 30% of all urgent calls.
The University has the perspective to integrate with the main scientific schools and funds of Western Europe .

The main principles of education at the Ivano-Frankivsk State Medical University are Christian morals, competence, regeneration of national traditions and the idea of state independence.
There are 7 hostels at the students' disposal and one of them for young students' families. The students can get their out-patient treatment at the students' polyclinic.
The University has dining-rooms and coffee-houses with 354 places total.
At the students' disposal there are good facilities for going for sports. The University has a unique sports complex consisting of a stadium, 3 sports halls, a swimming pool, a track-and-field athletics hall, tennis courts, a basketball play-ground.

The University has its own House of Culture and the ceremonies hall accommodating 250 persons. The University's Culture House was organized at former Jewish synagogue, with a vast participation of the teachers and students, in 1950. In 1998 the new modern premises was built.
Presently the 12 amateur art groups comprise over 400 students. The leading group with which the House's image associates is the “Friendship” folk dance group. It was created more that 30 years ago. Hundreds of concerts have been given for the Pre-carpathia and visitors to the region. This group is featured with high proficiency. It is a laureate of many All-Union and Republican competitions and festivals. Everywhere it has been given a cordial reception. Now the group's repertoire includes over 20 Choreographic compositions, but the young artists are in constant search for new performances, working energetically at their rehearsals.
The “Art” sport-dance group headed by O.M. Mulina performs confidently. It is a many-time participant and laureate of the All-Union festivals and competitions in break-dance and rock-and-roll in many cities of Ukraine and Poland . Now it is the best sport-dance group in Ivano-Frankivsk Region. Besides then in 2002 the “Art” sport-dance group was obtained of National degree.
The National mail choral chapel “Surma” headed by Associate Prof. B. Volosianko is a famous in Ukraine and foreign countries: Poland , England , Italy and France
The “Prima” comic group is distinctly original and creative, very popular with to students. It has participated in a lot of reviews, city humor festivals, fairs. Other groups working at the Culture House are the folk ensemble, pop-song group, disco club. Regularly competitions of the “ready-witted ones” clubs and the “Student's Spring' festivals” involving various Universities and Institutes are held.
Foreign students constitute a large part of the amateur artists. Many graduates of the University, now its teachers or specialists, keep in touch with the art groups they used to be members of when students.
The Students' Scientific Society (SSS) affiliates with the University science divisions and its activities closely associates with the problems dealt with by the University's scientists. Within SSS, under the guidance of professors and teachers hundreds of students do active scientific researches. Independent scientific work affords the students highly valuable opportunities of acquiring and mastering theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as of gaining creative and organizing skills.
SSS was created in 1945. Since its early days the society has been paying great attention to the students' purposeful and deep studies of actual medical problems, holding of scientific conferences.
The SSS advisers in various years were such distinguished scientists as professors Z.V.Duma, A.O.Klymenko, V.A.Levitsky, I.G.Kupnovycka.
An important event in the University's life was the publishing (1988) of the first volume of students' transactions. The collection comprises the reports of 59 authors.
Nowadays over 1700 students participate in scientific researches at the University chairs. The results of students' works are annually reviewed at summary conferences o SSS presently headed by Prof. O.V. Buyanova.
Today the science research work of students has transformed from a supplement to the training process into its most important element, a necessary means of improving the efficiency of specialist training.
The science library is a scientific, informational, auxiliary-for-education and cultural division of the University. Among the library's employees there are 31 librarians with higher education. The book/journal fund consists of more than 295772 copies. The number of readers is over 3500.

The University's library is situated in center of Ivano-Frankivsk in building, where many famous Ukrainian and Polish writers lived.
The library turned into a large educational, scientific and informational center. Improving all forms and methods of service, the library endeavors to most fully meet the readers' demands.
To most fully meet the informational demands of the readers the interlibrary loan system is widely used. Annually 265 group and individual borrowers receive more than 1600 sources from 300 libraries of CIS. The science library makes borrowings not only from the largest libraries of Ukraine , Russia and other countries of CIS but also from the leading libraries of USA , France , Japan , former Yugoslavia , Germany , Spain etc.
